2012 Shows: Placement | Score:Wagner HS 1/14/12: 1st | 52.4Manor HS McNeil HS WGI Austin 2011 WGI World Championships Finalist2011 TECA Undefeated IA class2011 TCGC State IA Champions2011 WGI Southeastern Colorguard Championships Bronze MedalATX Winterguard was started in the spring of 2008 to create an opportunity for high school students in the Austin area who did not have a winterguard program at their school.We held our first Open Gym in the spring of 2008 at Elgin Middle School in Elgin, TX, with over 20 people in attendance. Over the summer, spin camps and open gyms were held around the Austin area. We took the floor in 2009 with 9 performers competing in Independent A class in TCGC and at the Austin WGI Regional.In 2010, We took the floor with 15 performers, again in Independent A class in TCGC and attended all the Texas WGI Regionals. 2010 was ATX's first appearance at WGI World Championships in Dayton, OH.2011, our third year of existence, led to our most ambitious season to date. We introduced ATX Jr and ATX Sr, and each group had a successful season competing in TECA, TCGC, and WGI Regionals. Q: I have questions about Auditions. Where can I get them answered?A: Scroll to the bottom of the FAQs to read Audition Specific FAQs. You can also attend one of our summer spin camps/open gyms and ask questions there, send an email, or message us on Facebook, Tumblr, or Twitter.Even better, complete the Interest Form and we will send an email with information to you!Q: How much does it cost to be in one of the ATX Winterguards?A: ATX Cadets, ATX Jr and ATX Sr Tuition is _ $50 a month. ATX Tuition is _ $100 a month. Tuition is payable throughout the season, with a payment schedule set up at first rehearsal. There is a separate charge for WGI Championships, which is required for ATX, and is based on the cost of transportation and housing for WGI World Championships.We also offer numerous fundraisers to help reduce your personal costs. These are offered throughout the year, not just the performance season. Q: Can I be in college and perform with ATX?A: We highly encourage you to be enrolled in college and/or working while participating as a member of ATX. Q: When do the groups rehearse?A: All groups rehearse only on weekends. ATX Cadets/ATX Jr: Saturday mornings and/or afternoonsATX Sr: Saturday afternoons/eveningsATX: Saturday and Sunday. ATX sometimes rehearses on a Friday nightQ: Can I be in college and perform with ATX?A: We highly encourage you to be enrolled in college and/or working while participating as a member of ATX. Q: Can I be in middle school or high school & perform with ATX, ATX Jr, or ATX Cadets?A: MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE WELCOME TO PARTICIPATE IN AUDITIONS! Participating in auditions is a great way to learn new techniques and understand what is expected as a member of an independent organization. Everyone is welcome to audition. If your middle school or high school does not have a winter guard, you will earn a spot in ATX Cadets, ATX Jr, or possibly even ATX!However, WGI created a policy in 1996 that reads:"WGI discourages independent color guards from utilizing membership composed of any high school students who were previously enrolled in an active winter guard high school program and have not yet graduated."We believe that this rule fosters growth in local high schools programs. ATX Winterguard will in no way knowingly recruit students from local high school programs that have a Scholastic Winter Guard. Q: What are the main differences between your guards?A: Our Guards page lists most of the differences. However, the main differences are: ATX is an internationally competitive program, so its audition process and rehearsal schedule are more in depth than the other groups.ATX Cadets, ATX Jr, and ATX Sr are locally competitive with lighter schedules and NO AUDITIONS.Q: What is ATX's philosphy about guard and competition?A: ATX Winterguard encourages team work, sportsmanship, civic pride and contributions of one's personal best to a group effort through a musical- and performance-focused activity in which there is a blending of the arts and athletics.By creating a foundation of mutual-respect, trust, and encouragement, our performers will gain skills and confidence in their abilities to excel, and as a result, will excel in both guard and life.We see ourselves not as competitors against other guards, but as a family that strives to achieve greatness together through individual effort.AUDITION SPECIFIC FAQSQ: How much is the audition fee?A: There is a non-refundable, one-time audition fee for ATX each season. This cost covers rental of the facility, insurance for the season, and administrative costs. Audition fee for 2013 season TBA.ATX Jr, ATX Sr, and ATX Cadets do not have auditions; however, there is a non-refundable deposit that must be paid at the first rehearsal.for each group each season. This cost covers rental of the facility, insurance for the season, and administrative costs. The fee can be paid by cash, check, money order, or credit/debit card. There is a $3 service charge added to Credit/Debit Card payments. Make Checks Payable to ATX Winterguard. There will be an additional $30 fee for returned (bounced) checks.Q: Is equipment provided for auditions?A: Flags will be provided. You should bring a rifle and/or sabre if you plan to audition for a weapon spot. ATX spins 39" King sabres and 39" King Kong rifles in all our guards (except ATX Cadets).Q: What else should I bring?A: Complete the ATX Winterguard Interest Form (link located on the Guards page) Insurance and emergency contact information (you will need to fill out a form before auditioning)Water, healthy snacks, and a positive attitude. Money for food during break if one is provided. There are a number of inexpensive places to eat nearby. A friend or two!Q: What do I wear to audition?A: Please wear all-black clothing for auditions. Wear comfortable, form fitting clothing. We will begin with movement. You will need something that allows you to have maximum flexibility and your knees, feet, and ankles must be able to be seen. No Jeans.Q: What will we do at auditions?A: The audition process will give you a true ATX Winterguard experience. You will be exposed to our movement and equipment technique principles and you will meet the entire staff. You will learn an audition routine and will perform in small groups. Be prepared to finish any dance or equipment phrases as part of your audition. It will be fun! Also on the audition will be:Dance: - Chasse, Saute, Chanee turns (both directions), plie in all positions, port de bras, both sides - tendu, rond de jambe, arabesque, single, and try double pirouettes and leaps. You will also learn a short choreographed phrase in the style of: Classical/Ballet, Modern/Contemporary, or Jazz.Flag: - Spins on both hands, carves, tossing singles, 1 ½ and doubles on both hands. Vertical, horizontal, and angle tosses on both hands. Body with equipment work and underneath tosses.Sabre: - Spins on both hands, flourishes, hilt tosses 4, 5 and try 6 - blade tosses 3, 4, and try 5. Different catch positions. Body with equipment work and underneath tosses.Rifle: - Spins on both hands, flourishes, tosses 4, 5, 6, and try 7. Different catch positions. Body with equipment work and underneath tosses.Q: Will we know that day who is in the guard?A: You will either be offered a contract or asked to come back for re-evaluation. Being called back means we just want to get another look at your skills. There is no additional charge for call-back evaluations. You will be placed in the guard that is the best fit for your skill level or age bracket.Q: What if I am traveling? Do you provide transportation or housing?A: Our performers are willing to carpool from Leander, Killeen, Waco, San Antonio, and other locations. ATX can provide housing during camp and performance weekends at no extra charge to you. If you have any additional questions or will be attending auditions and need assistance with directions, housing, or transportation, please contact Michael Vazquez at atxguard_gmail.com. Q: What if I am offered a contract but have to miss a rehearsal or camp?A: Attendance at rehearsals and camps is mandatory. Our schedule is set up far in advance. School-related activities that are a part of a grade, and family emergencies have been excused in the past. Time management of your family, school, work, and social schedules needs to allow you to attend every rehearsal and performance. We try to work around college/high school football game and marching band competition schedules.Members are expected to attend all rehearsals and performances for their respective groups.
